Dubai’s rapid urbanization has led to increasing traffic congestion, a challenge the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is addressing through a series of ambitious infrastruture projects.
Expanding Road Networks and Improving Capacity
- Al Khail Road Expansion: A Dhs700 million project to construct new bridges and widen existing roadways will enhance traffic flow across key districts including Zabeel, Meydan, and Al Quoz.
- Al Rebat Street Exit Enhancement: The RTA has successfully expanded Exit 55 on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, significantly improving traffic flow near Mirdif City Centre.
- Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement: This ongoing project involves the construction of multiple bridges to enhance connectivity between Bur Dubai and Dubai Islands, aiming to accommodate over 19,000 vehicles per hour.
- Hessa Street Upgrade: A Dhs689 million initiative to widen Hessa Street and improve key intersections will significantly boost capacity and reduce travel times.
- Dubai Harbour Connectivity: The construction of a new bridge will provide direct access to Dubai Harbour, reducing travel times from 12 to three minutes.
- Umm Suqeim Road Project: This Dhs332 million project will expand the intersection with Al Khail Road and construct new bridges to improve traffic flow between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.
Promoting Public Transport and Intelligent Traffic Systems
- Dedicated Bus and Taxi Lanes: The RTA is developing 13.1 km of dedicated lanes across six key streets to encourage public transport usage and reduce road congestion.
- Fleet Expansion: The addition of 636 new buses, including 40 electric ones, will enhance public transport options and reduce carbon emissions.
- Intelligent Traffic Systems: The second phase of this project will deploy advanced technology, including sensors, cameras, and variable message signs, to optimize traffic flow and improve journey times.
